The Board of Directors of Mercy Hospital has named Michael Youso, MBA, to the position of CEO, effective April 2. Youso will replace Michael Delfs who is leaving to serve as CEO of Jamestown Regional Medical Center in his home state of North Dakota.
A Moose Lake native, Youso comes to Mercy from Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital in Grand Rapids where he has served as President and CEO since 2010. During his tenure at Grand Itasca, he completely transformed the organization’s culture, leading to increased quality, access, employee and physician engagement, improved financial performance and broad community support. He extended patient care into the community with the opening of the YMCA Clinic. He also significantly expanded services available to patients with the addition of the Rapid Clinic, Grand Itasca Retail Pharmacy, and most recently the Cancer and Infusion Center.
“The Mercy Hospital District Board is extremely excited to have Mike Youso returning to his hometown to serve as our CEO,” said Kelly Goeb, M.D., Mercy Board chair. “He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the position and will be able to continue moving Mercy forward into the future.”
Prior to Grand Itasca, Youso had a long career with Fairview Health Services (1982-2010) where he served in a number of different positions. His most recent position as President of Fairview Northland Health Services (2002-2010) included overseeing Fairview Northland Hospital and Fairview Northland’s four clinics. Under his direction, Northland received national recognition for exceptional clinical outcomes for acute myocardial infarction and heart failure in 2006 and 2007 and won the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s national innovation award for medication reconciliation. In addition, he completed a $13 million hospital and $3 million clinic expansion while improving financial performance.
A graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, Youso earned his MBA at the University of St. Thomas. He has served on the Itasca Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors since 2015 and was on the CDI/Grand Rapids Board of Directors from 2014-2018. He has also served on committees of the Minnesota Hospital Association.
