Ambulance service begins with donated ambulance from Wes Hamlin

Intensive Cornonary Care Unit opens

Addition increases nursing home beds to 94; Expansion
creates larger emergency room, new medical records department, doctors’ lounge,
nurses’ lounge, new lab, and corridor connection to Gateway Family
Health Clinic.

Hospital reduces certified beds
1980
Designated Local Trauma Emergency Hospital by Arrowhead Regional Development
Commission

Facility name changed to Mercy Hospital and Health Care Center
May 1984
New corporation with Gateway Clinic formed. Family Health System, Inc.
Corporation offers pharmacy, home care services and wellness program.
May 1, 1986
Mercy Hospital and Health Care Center is first hospital in Minnesota
to become smoke-free facility

Mercy becomes sole owner of Family Health System, Inc.

Outpatient addition and hospital remodeling completed

Mercy chosen as first site for the Minnesota Rural Health School, a program
of the University of Minnesota
1997
Kenwood Place assisted living facility opens
Special Care Unit opens

Walters House, a residence for on-call and Rural Health School students,
opens

The Mercy Foundation is formed, board elected

New surgical wing opens

New Education Center opens, featuring two classrooms and working models
of an intensive care patient room and an emergency treatment room
2004
Mercy receives designation as a Critical Access Hospital

Gateway Family Health Clinic opens new facility west of Mercy on Highway
